Gary White, the Chair of CFWS kindly presented some wines from his private collection from South America. My tasting notes are here.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting, not getting the chance to taste South American wines professionally. The thing that struck me most was that the wines represented tremendous value for money. Some were not the best or most complex wines I have ever drunk, but for under £20 a bottle in most cases they were right up there with the best wines I had drunk in this price bracket.
My personal favourite was the Vina Mayu Reserva Syrah, which at £11.99 retail is an absolute bargain. It had a deep and intense meaty aroma, a highly complex red fruit development on the palate with secondary and tertiary flavours, with a great balance of oaky smoothness.
